Chapter Twenty
Libby stared at her. âAh.â
âIt just struck a chord,â said Fran. âBut, as you said, doesnât do to jump to conclusions.â
âNo.â Libby took a thoughtful sip of tea. âAnd every vicar whoâs been living abroad isnât necessarily a paedophile.â
âNo.â Fran gazed at the fire. âWould it be worth finding out about him, though?â
âThis isnât like you,â said Libby. âItâs usually me wanting to find out about people.â
âItâs rubbing off on me,â said Fran with a grin. âAnyway, how could we? He doesnât sound very sociable.â
âI wonder if he goes to church in Nethergate? Patti says she doesnât really know the vicar there, and wonât go digging for us. And we can hardly tip up for morning service or whatever.â
âPity we donât know any church-goers in Heronsbourne,â said Fran. âI didnât even know there was a church there.â
âNeither did I until Patti told me. I wonder if Dotty Barlowe knows? Sheâs his next-door neighbour. And what about the neighbours the other side. Martin Harris mentioned them. What did he say their names were?â Libby frowned. âHughes, thatâs it.â
âWhat about them?â asked Fran.
âMaybe they go to church?â
âI donât see how that would help. We donât know them, either.â
âMaybe,â Libby said, âI could call in on Dotty on the pretext of leaving the car to explore the beach, and get chatting about the neighbours? She seems to like a good gossip.â
Fran looked at her solemnly for a moment. âThatâs not a bad idea. Could I come?â
âWhen would Guy let you off?â
âMonday morning?â suggested Fran.
âYouâre on!â said Libby.
Dotty would be only too pleased to see them on Monday morning.
âCall in when you arrive and weâll have coffee. How about that?â she said.
âLovely,â said Libby. âAbout eleven?â
She picked Fran up in Nethergate at ten forty-five.
âWhat are we going to ask her?â Fran asked.
âPlay it by ear,â said Libby. âShe was at The Red Lion last week, so she knows the sort of questions weâre asking.â
Dotty, as before, welcomed them at the door of Spindrift with a beaming smile.
âOh, itâs so nice to have visitors,â she said. âWe donât know enough people here yet. Edie would come round, but itâs a bit far for her to walk, and she doesnât like to keep asking her son for lifts.â
âWhat about the other ladies you meet at The Fox?â Libby asked, as they followed her up the stairs.
âYes, sometimes. Not often, though.â Dotty ushered them into her spectacular sitting room, which Fran duly admired.
âWhat about your neighbours, though?â she asked. âAll being newcomers together?â
Dotty pulled a face.
âNot really our sort. Sally and Paul Hughes are all right, but sheâs a bit of an invalid.â Dotty sniffed. âThough I reckon itâs all in her mind.â
âWhat about the other side?â asked Libby, coming away from the window, where Fran was still admiring the view.
âOh, him.â Dotty snorted as she went into the kitchen. âI told you, didnât I? Heâs a retired vicar. Godfrey Peterson. Barely speaks to anyone, as far as I can see.â
âI heard about him,â said Fran. âI met someone from the Save the Marshes group, and she said he used to belong to it.
